This section shows what federal sources say it costs to replace, install and repair home heating and cooling equipment.
DOE's 2017 rule analysis averaged $3,935 to $4,134 for a 3-ton split blower-coil AC at 13 to 15 SEER. Those figures are in 2015 dollars, as the AC replacement cost guide explains. DOE's 2017 rule analysis averaged $4,686 to $4,806, in 2015 dollars, for a 3-ton split heat pump at 14 to 15 SEER. DOE's 2023 analysis put the average installed cost of a non-weatherized gas furnace at $3,571 at 80% AFUE. At 95% AFUE, it put the cost at $3,984. Both figures are in 2022 dollars, per the furnace cost guide. All three are federal modeling inputs, not 2026 price quotes.
A 2023 study for EIA estimated $2,030 installed, in 2022 dollars, for one 12 kBtu/h ductless mini-split heat pump. This figure is a federal modeling input, not a 2026 quote. We found no government source that publishes 2026 installed prices for central air conditioners.
BLS's producer price index for HVAC and refrigeration equipment makers rose from 312.596 in August 2025 to a preliminary 324.820 in August 2026. By The HVAC Standard's calculation from BLS data, the index rose about 3.9%, as the 2026 equipment price guide explains. This index tracks manufacturers' selling prices, not what a homeowner pays for an installed system.
