Articles and calculators on this site carry the byline "The HVAC Standard Editorial Team". Articles are researched and drafted with AI assistance and reviewed by a human editor. The editor of record is the publisher, Joel Keith. While the site is in preview, articles are posted after the citation check, and the editor reviews them before the site launches.

How an article is made

  1. A fact pack of quoted primary sources. We collect the facts an article needs from federal and state agencies, utilities and standards bodies. Each entry records the source's address, the exact words from the source that support the fact, the date we accessed it, and the place and period it covers. A secondary source, such as a trade publication, is used only where no primary source covers the point, and it is marked as secondary.
  2. Drafting only from that pack. An AI writing assistant drafts the article from the fact pack alone. Each draft comes with a trace that ties its claims to entries in the pack.
  3. An independent citation check. A separate AI reviewer, not the one that wrote the draft, checks every claim on the page against its source. That includes the title, the summary, the short answer, the body, the FAQ, and every chart and table. A script also re-opens every source in the fact pack and confirms each quoted passage still appears there word for word.
  4. Corrections before publishing. Every fix the citation check requires is made before the article is published.
  5. Editor approval. The editor reviews the corrected article and approves it. During the preview, this review happens before launch.

The three live calculators went through the same citation check. Each one explains its formula and defaults in a "How this works" section, and the methodology page links to each one.

After publishing

An automated check of our sources is scheduled every week. It flags changes for the editor, who updates affected pages by hand. The methodology page explains how it works. When we get something wrong, the corrections page explains how we fix it and note it.
